Are you thinking of having your bathroom renovated?
Bathroom renovations are a sure-fire way to spruce up one of the most used rooms in any household. However, many people go about the entire renovation in the wrong way and this often ends up being costly. As bathroom experts with over 20 years of experience, here are five things to know before you go ahead and start your bathroom renovation.
1. DIY is a terrible idea despite popular belief
From cable TV to Netflix and even Youtube, DIY shows abound that attempt to show people ‘how-to-do-things-themselves’. While there are projects you can tinker on around the house, a bathroom renovation is definitely not one of them. Bathroom renovations should only be carried out by qualified and licensed professionals. For this reason, we strongly discourage clients from attempting DIY bathroom renovations.
2. The average bathroom renovation takes time to complete
Bathroom renovations, in general, take at least three-four weeks to complete. Preparation being the biggest factor or time as this is critical to ensure the bathroom not only looks great but will stand the test of time. And don’t forget, if you have a single bathroom in your household you will need to make a plan about what you’ll do while the renovations are taking place.
3. Your bathroom renovation will probably cost more than you anticipate
Bathroom renovations can seem costly. However, this is a space you’re going to enjoy for many years to come and if you ever decide to sell your home, a recently renovated bathroom can up the selling price of your property. Looking at things this way you’ll understand that this renovation is, in fact, an investment. According to the Housing Industry Association, the average cost for a bathroom renovation in Australia in 2018 was $17,522. Luxury bathrooms cost upwards of $25,000 depending of course on what you’d like done.
4. A good bathroom designer is a non-negotiable
If you want a sophisticated bathroom like the ones you keep seeing on Instagram and Pinterest, you’ll need to bring onboard a skilled bathroom designer. This is particularly true if you’re looking to replace the bathtub and shower. Alternatively, you might consider removing a wall or even moving a window. In order to get that swoon-worthy space, the bathroom designer needs to check out your current layout so they can gauge the feasibility of the project and come up with a custom plan.
5. Plan ahead when you renovate your bathroom
Unless you are buying a ready-made vanity, they can take up to 6 weeks to have a custom one made and delivered. Ensure all your selected supplies e.g. tiles, taps, toilets are in stock before your renovations start to prevent unnecessary delays.
